FIFTEEN
I squealed in horror.
Raxal shoved me off with a curse and disappeared.
More unintelligible sounds left my throat as I looked around in panic. Trees, bushes, grassy ground, open starry sky, not a building in sight. It had to be some field outside the city and not Earth, right? I had to be mistaken. There was no way thatâ
Raxal reappeared some distance away.
We stared at each other, and Iâm ashamed to confess that Raxal recuperated a lot faster than I. While I stood there with my mouth open, unable to make words form, he studied me with the expression of someone whoâd just gotten an ugly lamp gift and needed some time to decide where to put it.
âHuh,â he said. âInteresting.â
Not interesting. Not interesting at all.
âI need to deal with another matter first. Stay here,â he commanded.
His tone broke my paralysis. I stepped forward. âNo! Take me baââ He was already gone.
Crap. Once again, I scanned my surroundings. The night was silent but for the occasional insect sound, and the air smelled fresh and delicious. Almost as fresh and delicious as Air but tinged with the earthy scent of recently raked soil.
Earth scent, you say? No fricking kidding, Ana.
No need to panic, I reassured myself. I could fix this. Somehow. At least I was still in one piece, nothing was bleeding, and my wings werenât out.
As for the rest of me⦠That was another matter. My hand claws were out, my skin a muted red in the moonlight. My lower legs and feet had also transformed, tearing the lower seams of my jeans and turning my sneakers into a pair of ridiculous sandals, and my teeth felt pointier and weird in my mouth.
I was in my Red Angel form through no conscious thought of my own. The only things missing were my wings. Why hadnât they appeared? Because this was Earth and definitely not the middle of nowhere outside the city?
And the thing was, I didnât feel the exuberance and freedom, and, yes, slight blood-thirst, that always flooded me whenever I took on the Red Angelâs form. I felt no different. I was plain Ana with a coating of red.
Something to ponder later. Later in the land of not-Earth.
Closing my eyes, I willed myself back into Mortality.
Nothing happened. Sounds and smells didnât change. I squeezed my eyes harder, clenched my fists harder, thought harder.
My awareness of my surroundings took a nap and told me to wake it up when something changed.
Desperate, I tapped into the Red Angelâs power. It felt muted, as if it was as confused and disconcerted as I felt, and had decided to remain wary until conditions improved. It tingled through my veins rather than roared, left me hollow rather than filled to the brim and ready to explode. And no matter how much I tried, I couldnât fill the gnawing holeânot with power, not with will, not with air.
I took some steps, stopped, and tried again. Nothing. More steps, this time closer to the tree line surrounding the small field.
